FOOD GUIDE BOASTS REGION'S BEST PUBS

A selection of the region's best-loved pubs have been celebrating after they were named among the best in the country in a famous pub dining guide.

The 2008 edition of Michelin's Eating Out in Pubs guide features 21 pubs in Suffolk and Essex - three of which are listed for the first time.

Every pub has a full-page entry with a colour picture and descriptive text giving an insight into its character… A debutant is the Henny Swan, in Great Henny, near Sudbury, owned by Harry and Sofia Charalambous.

Mr Charalambous said: "We've been here for two-and-a-half years and there's been a lot of concentrated work.

"We're absolutely delighted to be in the guide and it builds on the success of last year after being named the top dining pub in Essex.

"Everything we cook is fresh and we have a very talented chef who puts the ingredients together carefully and lovingly.

"My wife is also a food connoisseur gourmet and she helps put together the menus. It's a mixture of all these things together."

The 2008 edition of Michelin's Eating Out in Pubs guide was launched last week and includes 564 of the best pubs in the UK and Ireland.

SWAN FLIES INTO GUIDE

TWO years after a major refurbishment a pub in the north of the county has been listed as Essex's Dining Pub of the Year in the Good Pub Guide 2007.

The Henny Swan, in Henny Street, has been awarded the accolade in the 25th anniversary edition of the guide, which is being published by Good Guides.

Sitting on the border of Essex and Suffolk, the pub underwent a £500,000 renovation in 2004 and has been run since by licensees Harry and Sofia Charalambous.

"We've put our heart and soul into the business since then and this recognition is fantastic reward for everyone's efforts," said Mr Charalambous.

SWAN SCOOPS BEST DINING TITLE

THE owners of the Henny Swan in Henny Street are celebrating after it was named best dining pub in Essex.

Located a few miles south of Sudbury, it had a major £500,000 refurbishment two years ago with a new restaurant and kitchen built.

Now run by seasoned hoteliers and restaurateurs, Harry and Sofia Charalambous, after the refurbishment they felt the pub deserved dining to match the new look and so hired a chef consultant to advise on their whole approach to food.

That has well and truly paid off with an entry in the 25th anniversary of the Good Pub Guide, out this month, as Essex's Dining Pub of the Year.

Harry said: "Having sold our hotel, we saw the Swan after its refurbishment and couldn't resist the temptation to put our stamp on what is a beautiful pub."

LUXURY YOU CAN AFFORD

THE Henny Swan looks every bit as classy as the E-type Jag parked outside as we wandered in on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Eleven miles north of Colchester, overlooking the willow-lined River Stour on the Essex-Suffolk border, it's the ideal spot for a riverside pint and a bite to eat.

The Swan prides itself on 'relaxed dining' - so if there really are any adrenaline-junky foodies out there looking for steak au trauma with a side order of stress, they had better go somewhere else.

The food is fantastic, the surroundings idyllic and the service second-to-none.

Starters include grilled haloumi wrapped in Parma ham on rocket (£4.95) and homemade duck liver pate with red onion compote and toast (£5.25), while for mains you can opt for roast beef and Yorkshire pud (£8.95), spinach and feta cheese filo parcels with roasted tomato sauce (£9.25), seared escalope of salmon (£11.50) or char-grilled rib-eye steak with wild mushroom sauce (£13.50).

We decided to super-size the starters menu, so I tucked into two salmon and smoked salmon fishcakes with sweet chilli dip. They were huge, with a crunchy breadcrumb coating and dreamy, creamy, smoky filling, leaving just enough room for a portion of chunky chips.

My companion went for roquefort and sun-dried tomato tartlets with tangy tomato vinaigrette - two generous melt-in-the-mouth tarts jam-packed with flavour. Usually I can rely on her failing to clear her plate and then gallantly dive in, but not today - even with more of those golden chips and a vast, shared Henny Salad with olives and feta cheese.

With drinks the bill came to just short of £35, and worth every penny. The Henny Swan is one luxury you can enjoy without breaking the bank, unlike that E-type Jag.
